Christmas getaway in the Charente Maritime

The Charente Maritime in France is second only to the Cote D'Azur for hours of sunshine and is always a popular summer destination, In the autumn and winter months, the Charente Maritime can provide a blissful escape from the sometimes stressful holiday season, In winter, if the tinsel in the shops in October and the sound of Christmas carols in the supermarkets is filling you with dread of the festive season ahead, why not book a cottage in this fabulous area and escape the crowds and stress of Christmas in England, Instead spend it wrapped in the warmth and calm of France, The French only have Christmas Day off as a public holiday and then its back to normal on Boxing Day, This means that the fuss is kept very low key, and the longest queues you will see are for the crates of oysters that are essential for any fete, Browse through the market at St Jean D'Angely on Christmas Eve and pick up some superb sea food, Oysters, prawns and langoustines are all stacked high, After you dine on delicious seafood have a hot chocolate in one of the bars, And don't forget to buy a bouche from the patisserie for dessert! Alternatively do as we did one Christmas Eve and visit Futuroscope near Poitiers, There were no queues so it was easy and fun for all the family, A walk on the beach at St Georges De Didonne on Christmas Day is a great way to escape the Queens speech and enjoy the great outdoors, Head home for a traditional meal of oysters and duck in front of a cosy wood burning stove, What more could you want? Take in ice skating in the square at Rochefort and then relax with a glass of vin chaud, You can also visit the Aquarium at La Rochelle or take a tour of Hennessy or Otard in Cognac,
There is plenty to see and do out of season in this wonderful area so what are you waiting for? I promise you won't hear Slade singing Merry Christmas Everyone anywhere! Enjoy the peace and serenity of a Christmas in the Charente Maritime
